Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2005
Last updated: October 23, 2026
Overview
Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2005 is a compilation title that bundled two separate Hoyle releases, Hoyle Puzzle Games and Hoyle Board Games, into a single package, advertised on its retail listing as “40+ classic games and brain-teasing puzzles”1. It was released for Windows PC in September 2004: Sierra’s own product page gives September 16, 20042, while Metacritic, GameFAQs and the Amazon listing give September 14, 2004134. The “2005” in the title is the edition name, in the style of Sierra’s other model-year Hoyle releases of fall 2004 such as Hoyle Card Games 20055; the game itself first shipped in 2004. It continued Sierra Entertainment’s long-running Hoyle series of digital adaptations of traditional games. All games included in the collection were based on official rules from Hoyle, “the authority for over 200 years”1.
Metacritic’s description pitches it as “Two Hoyle titles for one great price,” with 18 puzzle games “from Mahjong Titles to Word Searches” alongside “Backgammon, Chess, and 16 other favorites” from Hoyle Board Games3. The game also included the series’ Facemaker feature, letting players customize their character “from facial features to clothes”16.
Metacritic and GameFAQs credit Sierra Entertainment as developer and VU Games as publisher34, and Sierra’s 2004 product page carries a Sierra Entertainment copyright with the Vivendi Universal Games trademark notice2; the retail listing names Encore Software as manufacturer1, and GameSpy and IGN list Encore as publisher67. It was rated “E for Everyone” by the ESRB, with “Comic Mischief” as its content descriptor64. It offered interactive computer opponents with multiple skill levels6.

Puzzle Games
Metacritic describes the puzzle half as 18 puzzle games ranging “from Mahjong Titles to Word Searches”3; Sierra’s own product page says “from crosswords to word searches”2. In March 2005 the official Hoyle site described the then-current Hoyle Puzzle Games as adding “two new puzzle games—Rays and Word Searches,” along with 1,000 crossword puzzles8. eBay’s catalog entry for the bundle (same UPC) names Anagrams, Crosswords, Gravity Tiles, Hangman, The Incredible Machine, MahJonng Tiles, Slide Tiles, Edge Tiles, Maze Racer, Maze Raider, Memory Tiles, Placer Racer, Solitaire Arcade, Star Collector and Time Breaker among the puzzle games9, though that catalog text also contains evident errors (it repeats Gravity Tiles and MahJonng Tiles in the board-game list).
MobyGames documents a separate, standalone Hoyle Puzzle Games 2005 with a 21-game list (including Edge Tiles, Slide Tiles and The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions), but that list has no word-search game and does not match the 18-game count, so it cannot be confirmed as this compilation’s puzzle disc10.
Board Games
Metacritic gives the board half as “Backgammon, Chess, and 16 other favorites”3, and Sierra’s page promises “backgammon, chess, pachisi, and more than a dozen other board favorites”2, making 36 games in all, which matches GameSpy’s “36 classic games”6. eBay’s catalog text adds Mancala, Reversi, Wordox, Yacht and “Zilch (new for this edition)” to the board list9.
Package Highlights (GameSpy)
GameSpy’s listing for the whole package, puzzle and board halves together, names the following as included6:
- Backgammon
- Crosswords
- Checkers
- Chess
- Dominoes
- Mahjong
- Pool
- Solitaire
- Chinese Checkers
- Rummy Squares
- “and much more”
Gameplay
Facemaker Character Customization
A signature feature of the Hoyle series, the Facemaker system let players create their own unique player, customizing “everything from facial features to clothes”16.
Multiplayer Options
Players could “play together on the same computer and challenge your friends and family,” or play alone against computer opponents with multiple skill levels6.
Bonus Handheld Content
The package included bonus versions of Mahjongg, Backgammon and Placer Racer “for use on Palm OS and Windows CE Handhelds”6. Sierra’s product page lists the handheld requirement as any PalmOS device running version 3.1 or later, or a Pocket PC2.
Reception
Contemporary Reviews
Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2005 received little coverage from gaming publications. Metacritic lists no critic reviews for the PC version11, IGN’s page shows no rating and no user reviews7, and Giant Bomb shows no user reviews12.

Development
Production
Metacritic credits development to Sierra Entertainment3. Sierra sold it under its own label: the October 2004 alphabetical catalog on sierra.com lists “Hoyle Puzzle & Board 2005” under Family Games, beside Hoyle Card Games 2005 and Hoyle Casino 3D5. No development credits for the compilation itself were found in the sources consulted. MobyGames’ credits for the standalone Hoyle Puzzle Games 2005 (44 people, with Ryan Spain as designer and Stephen H. Van Horn as executive producer) belong to that separate release; whether the same team produced the puzzle disc bundled here is unconfirmed10.

Trivia
-
Edge Tiles and Shisensho: In a 2019 Steam discussion for the game Shisensho Solitaire, a player wrote that the game was “Edge Tiles from Hoyle’s Puzzle Games 2005” and later added: “I never knew that what Hoyle put in there game as ‘Edge Tiles’ was actually an asian game!”15 The developer replied with a link to this compilation’s Amazon listing15; whether the player’s copy was this compilation or the standalone puzzle release is not stated. eBay’s catalog entry for the bundle does list Edge Tiles among its puzzle games9.
-
Game Count Discrepancy: The retail listing claims “40+ classic games”1, while GameSpy says “36 classic games”6 and Metacritic’s description adds up to 36 (18 puzzle + 18 board)3.
