Hoyle Casino 2008
Last updated: October 9, 2026
Overview
Hoyle Casino 2008 is an edition of the long-running Hoyle casino game franchise, marketed as “the best-selling casino game of all time.”12 Developed and published by Encore Software, it offered more than 600 variations of 16 popular casino games, set in a “realistic Vegas environment” pitched at “novice and expert computer users alike.”23 Despite the “2008” in its title, it reached US shelves in fall 2007, with GameFAQs, Metacritic and RAWG giving October 1, 2007 and IGN September 11, 2007.4567 It shipped on a combined PC/Mac DVD, and Mac users at the time greeted it as the return of Hoyle games to the Mac with Mac OS X support, the last Mac OS 9 versions having come from Sierra in 2002.89
The game follows the tradition of Sierra’s Hoyle’s Official Book of Games series, which began in 1989 and spun off the dedicated Hoyle Casino line in 1996.1011 Wikipedia states that a bug in the 2007 edition, which froze card games for 30 seconds after each bet, was fixed in Hoyle Casino 2008, although that statement carries a “citation needed” tag and no other source for it has been found.10

Gameplay
Interface and Controls
Hoyle Casino 2008 is set in a virtual Las Vegas casino in which, as throughout the series, players create profiles and wager virtual money at the tables and machines.210 Retail copy promised “attention to rules, and a simple interface.”12 Australian reviewer Impulse Gamer highlighted the “great face creator that allows you to create a variety of different avatars,” and the feature list included 12 virtual opponents with adjustable skill levels, in-game tutorials, and HOYLE Bucks earned to unlock new features.9
Games and Variations
Newegg’s product listing names the games included:2
- Online: Texas Hold ‘Em
- Table and card games: Baccarat, Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Fortune Pai-Gow Poker, Four Card Poker, Let It Ride, Pai Gow Poker, Roulette, Royal Match 21, Three Card Poker
- Machines: Slots, Video Poker, Video Blackjack
- Other: Horse Racing, Keno, Solitaire, Spades
The listing advertises “more than 600 variations of 16 of the most popular casino games,” a figure Macworld repeated, although Amazon’s product description says “over 500 variations.”1213 The box also promised bonus multi-pay-line slot machines and “the official HOYLE rulebook and strategy guide.”312
Online Features
Hoyle Casino 2008 included an online version of Texas Hold ‘Em.213
Reception
Contemporary Reviews
Impulse Gamer’s James Wright reviewed the PC version in February 2008 and scored it 7.2. He praised the variety of games and the poker games’ “real-world odds,” but found the graphics dated, the sound effects “a little sparse,” and the AI “extremely harsh and unforgiving.” He concluded that the game “feels a little ‘lacking’ when compared to other Hoyle game titles,” though it was “Still worth the price.”9
Amazon’s listing shows an average of 3.6 out of 5 stars from 44 global ratings; the UK store itself has no UK reviews, and the written reviews shown come from US and Canadian buyers.1 US reviewer Robert C. Walker called them “boring games,” while another buyer, Sam, was “very disappointed in this dvd-not very realistic, not much fun and not so user friendly.”1
Technical Criticisms
In an Inside Mac Games forum thread, a player called jeffsters reported that the same cards and outcomes recurred when he restarted the game. Another poster, Eric5h5, suggested the developers “didn’t seed the RNG properly.” jeffsters concluded that “your winning or losing is preordained at the start of the hand/game and no amount of thought or strategy is going to change that.”8 One of the porting developers explained in the same thread that “The window sizes are fixed due to the sprite artwork.”8
Modern Assessment
Major gaming publications appear not to have reviewed the game: IGN lists it as “NR” (Not Rated), and Metacritic’s page shows no critic reviews or user scores.54
Aggregate Scores:

Development
Origins
Sierra Entertainment developed and published the Hoyle Casino series from 1996 through 2003, as part of the broader Hoyle’s Official Book of Games series.1011 The games are set in virtual Las Vegas casinos where players wager virtual money.10 Encore took over developing and publishing the series, which it handled from 2005 through 2016.10
Production
Hoyle Casino 2008 was published by Encore Software.47 A developer posting as “Hippieman” on the Inside Mac Games forum wrote that his team “did the porting work for both the Mac and Windows versions,” including “updates and such (like Vista stuff IIRC),” and added: “We were just finishing up Marathon when this started.”8
Technical Achievements
Hoyle Casino 2008 shipped Windows and Mac OS X versions on a single DVD.89 Unlike older Hoyle releases, which needed the CD in the drive for full visual and audio effects, the game installed entirely to the hard drive, taking nearly 1 GB.8 It also included online Texas Hold ‘Em.213

- RAM: 128 MB (512 MB RAM for Vista)
- Storage: 1 GB Hard Disk space
- Display: 640 x 480 at 16-bit color
- Media: DVD-ROM drive
The requirements quoted in the Inside Mac Games forum are lower: a Pentium 266 MHz, 16 MB RAM (64 MB for XP) and an 800x600 16-bit display.8
- Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later (Macworld gives 10.4.11 for the download version)

Technical Issues
According to Wikipedia’s uncited statement, the 30-second freeze after bets in the 2007 edition no longer occurs in this version.10 One Amazon buyer said they had not noticed that the game works only from a DVD drive.1 The fixed window sizes limited display flexibility, and in full-screen mode the game did not run at high resolutions.8 One forum user complained that outcomes repeated across restarts, which another user put down to an improperly seeded random number generator.8
Easter Eggs and Trivia
- Registration Key Location: The Mac installation registration key was printed on the back cover of the manual.8
- Billion Dollar Event: A forum user reported that “When you get to a billion dollars you’re forced to pay ransom to kidnappers and they take 999 million.”8

Legacy
Sales and Commercial Impact
The Hoyle Casino franchise was already a commercial success before this edition. In North America, Hoyle Casino 2000 sold 230,365 units and earned $6.15 million from January through October 2000, according to PC Data.10 Marketing for the 2008 edition called the series “the best-selling casino game of all time.”12
Platform Expansion
Hoyle Casino 2008 was one of the 2008-branded Hoyle titles that brought the series back to the Mac. The forum user Rob052067 wrote in October 2007: “For the first time ever, the family-favorite Hoyle Games have finally been released with Mac OS X compatiblity!” He added that the last Mac OS 9-compatible versions had come from Sierra in 2002, while Encore’s updates since then had been PC-only.8 Impulse Gamer’s feature list likewise advertised it as “PC/MAC compatible and on DVD for the first time!”9
Digital Distribution
In April 2008, Macgamestore.com and Encore announced a download version of the game for $19.95, with a demo available. Macworld noted that this was “the first time this collection has been available as a digital download,” as Encore had previously sold it only boxed.13
Related Games
A related business simulation, Hoyle Casino Empire, was released in 2002. The franchise also reached the Dreamcast and Game Boy Color in 2000.10
Continued Development
The next edition, Hoyle Casino Games (also known as Hoyle Casino 2009), followed on September 10, 2008. MobyGames credits Freeverse as its developer and lists a face creator, multiple profiles, achievements and trophies.14 Encore later released Hoyle Official Casino Games on Steam on October 14, 2016 (App ID 532950). It requires Windows Vista or later, a 1.0 GHz processor and a DirectX 9.0c-compatible card with 512 MB of video RAM.1516 That Steam page is now unlisted at the publisher’s request and does not appear in store search.16
