Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots

Last updated: October 23, 2026

Overview

Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots is a pirate-themed slot machine game released under the Hoyle brand by Encore Software, which GameFAQs and GamePressure list as both developer and publisher12. Encore’s official Hoyle store was already selling it as a $19.99 Windows download by July 2010, with a © 2010 Encore Software notice3, and by the end of 2010 Encore also sold it on a Macintosh/Windows DVD in a sleeve and in a retail box4. Encore’s website grouped it in its “Hoyle Games 2011” product line5, which may explain the 2011 dates and the “2011” disc label seen elsewhere6. The ESRB rated it T for Teen for Simulated Gambling, listing Encore Software as the company and Macintosh and Windows PC as platforms7. Wikipedia lists it as “Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots (2010)” among the spin-offs of the Hoyle Casino series8.

iOS versions followed in 2011: an iPhone/iPad edition released February 15, 2011, and an iPad “HD” edition released February 26, 201191011. GameFAQs and GamePressure give March 29, 2011 for the PC version12, a database date later than Encore’s own 2010 listings34.

The Hoyle Casino series began at Sierra Entertainment in 1996, with publication moving to Encore, Inc. after 20058; Swashbucklin’ Slots belongs to the Encore era and has no documented Sierra involvement. Its mobile promotional description opens “Sail Ho All Ye Landlubbers and Seafarers! Get ready for a brand-new treasure chest of fun from HOYLE, the official name in gaming”112.

Encore’s product copy for the PC/Mac edition promises “loot-filled mechanical and video slots” with “eye-catching graphics and exciting sound effects on every machine,” wagers in denominations from 1¢ to $500, and progressive and standard play3. Players wager virtual credits rather than real money7.

Story Summary

As a slot machine game, Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots has no narrative. Its framing is a pirate and sea theme: the ESRB describes “pirate-themed slot machines”7, and GamePressure notes “a great variety of motifs related to pirates and the sea” along with a “cartoon style of visual setting and humorous accents”2. Encore’s product copy calls it “fun for landlubbers and scallywags alike”3.

The promotional text carried on Metacritic and GameFAQs is written in pirate dialect and introduces “The Cap’n,” who “has offered 10 uniquely themed slots” and says, “Try your luck on the loosest slots on the seas!”112

Gameplay

Interface and Controls

Players wager virtual credits on slot machines, winning or losing credits depending on where the reels land7. According to the ESRB, “Hoyle Bucks” can be spent in a shopping section on items such as posters, trinkets and décor items7. Specific interface details for the PC and iOS versions are not documented in the sources consulted.

Structure and Progression

Sources describe the machine line-up differently depending on the version:

  • Encore’s official PC/Mac product page: “25 video and mechanical slot machines with up to 20 paylines”34. The page names 14 video slots (Beijing Buckaneers, “Hanuter Harbor” as spelled there, Desert Island Doubles, Beaks & Booty, Pirates vs. Ninjas 2, Sea Monster Spin, Sirens, Jackpot Island, Poseidon’s Plunder, Cannonball Cashouts, Beach Time Fun, Blossom Bucks, Blue Plate Special and Ninjas of the Caribbean) and 5 mechanical slots (Galleons & Gold, Inked & Paid, Luck & Spirits, Masthead Mania and Rigs & Reels), 19 names in all against the stated 253. MacGameStore carries the same “25 … up to 20 paylines” copy13.
  • GamePressure (PC): 25 machines, of which 20 are video slots and 5 simulate traditional three-reel mechanical machines with one payline2.
  • iOS editions: the App Store and Metacritic descriptions list “10 Slot games”: Beijing Buccaneers, Jackpot Island, Haunted Harbor, Beaks & Booty, Desert Island Doubles, Pirates vs. Ninjas, Sirens, Sea Monster Spin, Poseidon’s Plunder and Cannonball Cashout1210. GameFAQs also shows this text on its PC page1. The free iPad “HD Lite” edition included two of them, Haunted Harbor and Beaks and Booty14.
  • Newegg PC retail listing (outlier): “16 mechanical slot machines” and “More than 40 video slot games with up to 20 paylines”15. These figures disagree with Encore’s own copy and with GamePressure.

No manual or box scan was found to settle the exact machine count.

Puzzles and Mechanics

Play is chance-based. The PC/Mac edition offers progressive and standard play with denominations from 1¢ to $50023. Players can collect 100 trophies and more than 150 achievements3; GamePressure similarly gives “more than 100 trophies” and 150 achievements2. The promotional description claims “the most bonus rounds and swag yev [sic] ever seen”12.

Development

Origins

The Hoyle name entered computer games with Sierra On-Line’s Hoyle’s Official Book of Games series, which began in 198916. Its Hoyle Casino spin-off series was developed and published by Sierra Entertainment from 1996 to 2003 and by Encore, Inc. from 2005 to 20168. Wikipedia lists Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots (dated 2010) among the Hoyle Casino spin-offs, and records a compilation, Hoyle Casino Games [2010], that “includes Hoyle Casino Games (2009), Hoyle Slots (2009) and Hoyle Swashbucklin’ Slots (2010)”8. On Encore’s website the game sat in the “Hoyle Games 2011” category alongside Hoyle Card Games 2011, Hoyle Casino 2011, Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2011 and Hoyle Slots 20115.

Production

GameFAQs and GamePressure credit Encore Software as developer and publisher12. The iPad editions’ App Store listings carry the notice “Portions of content © Tik Games LLC”1014; no comparable credit was found for the PC/Mac edition. Individual developer credits were not found in the sources consulted; MobyGames has no entry for the game.

No strategy guides or related publications were found.

Critical Perspective

With no critic reviews on record9 and only a handful of GameFAQs user ratings1, the game is thinly documented. It was a late, themed entry in the Encore-era Hoyle line rather than one of the Sierra-developed titles8.
